By 2010, all NHS patient care information will be managed through one secure, electronic system available 24 hours a day.

The NHS Care Records Service (CRS) will contain a single, up-to-date electronic healthcare record for every patient in England. The system will allow records to be accessed by health and social care professionals when and where they’re needed, and give patients secure Internet access to their own health information.

Authorised health and social care professionals will be able to access up-to-date, electronic patient records securely for treatment notes, scans, diagnostic images, research and any other clinical or administrative information they need. They’ll have this access wherever they’re located, 24 hours a day.
