Protecting the organisation from undesirable employees, internal contractors, suppliers, manufacturing partners, agents and dealers/distributors

In the financial services sector, screening of customers to identify sanctioned individuals is a legal requirement, with transgressions often resulting in multi-million pound fines and even the possibility of criminal prosecution. Organisations from other sectors are following their financial services counterparts’ leads and are proactively screening their customers against government, industry and third-party sanctions and Politically Exposed Persons (PEP) lists, as part of a risk-minimisation strategy.

But there are many groups that could impact an organisation’s financial and reputational position, beyond just customers alone. Undesirable employees, internal contractors, suppliers, manufacturing partners, agents, dealers/distributors all have the potential to impact on the organisation, either through fraud, association with money laundering, black marketeering, or even association with corrupt political regimes. As a consequence, a new type of screening is required which covers all those who have a touchpoint with the brand or the organisation as a whole – which we term ‘enterprise screening’.

Enterprise screening is particularly relevant for multi-national companies with a global presence, companies with large customer bases, and those with extended supply chains and partnerships, but it is our opinion that the systematic screening of employees, agents, associates, suppliers, business partners- anyone associated with the enterprise’s brand – will become standard best practice for all significant organisations within the next few years.
